Amazonas (Río)

"El río Amazonas es el río más caudaloso del mundo. Contiene más agua que el Nilo, el Yangtsé y el Misisipi juntos, y supone cerca de una quinta parte del agua dulce en estado líquido del planeta. El Amazonas, que tiene la cuenca hidrográfica más grande en el mundo, alrededor de 7,05 millones km², representa aproximadamente una quinta parte del total de caudal fluvial a nivel mundial. De hecho, el río tendría la mayor cuenca hidrográfica en el mundo incluso contando solamente Brasil, que entra con solo 1/5 del volumen que finalmente se descarga en el océano Atlántico. Estudios realizados por investigadores brasileños y peruanos en 2007 y 2008 apuntan a que también es el río de mayor longitud, aunque se sigue manteniendo un debate abierto en relación con este tema. En el año 2010 se confirmó que también es el río más largo del mundo, con 7062 km de longitud desde su nacimiento en la Quebrada de Apacheta, región de Arequipa, Perú.En sus extensiones superiores, sobre la confluencia del río Negro, el Amazonas es llamado Solimões en Brasil; sin embargo, en Perú, Colombia, Ecuador, así como el resto del mundo hispanohablante, el río es generalmente llamado el Amazonas río abajo desde la confluencia de los ríos Marañón y Ucayali en Perú. El sistema fluvial Ucayali-Apurímac está considerado la principal fuente del Amazonas, con la que es su principal afluente el arroyo glacial Carhuasanta que fluye de la montaña Nevado Mismi. El ancho del Amazonas es entre 1.6 y 10 km en su etapa baja, pero se expande (durante la temporada húmeda) hasta 48 km o más. El río entra en el océano Atlántico en un amplio estuario con 240 km de ancho. La boca del sistema principal es de 80 km. Debido a sus vastas dimensiones, es a veces llamada el Río Mar. El primer puente en el sistema fluvial del Amazonas (sobre el río Negro) abrió el 10 de octubre de 2010 cerca de Manaos, Brasil. El río proporciona grandes beneficios comerciales a ciudades amazónicas como Iquitos, Leticia, Manaos y Belém do Pará."

"The Amazon River (US /æmzn/ or UK /æmzn/; Spanish and Portuguese: Amazonas) in South America is the largest river by discharge of water in the world, and according to some experts, the longest in length. The headwaters of the Apurímac River on Nevado Mismi had been considered for nearly a century as the Amazon's most distant source, until a 2014 study found it to be the Cordillera Rumi Cruz at the headwaters of the Mantaro River in Peru. The Mantaro and Apurímac confluence, and with other tributaries form the Ucayali, which in turn confluences with the River Marañón upstream of Iquitos, Peru, to form what countries other than Brazil consider to be the main stem of the Amazon. Brazilians call this section of the river the Solimões above its confluence with the Rio Negro to form what Brazilians call the Amazon at the Meeting of Waters (Portuguese: Encontro das Águas) at Manaus, the river's largest city. At an average discharge of about 209,000 cubic metres per second (7,400,000 cu ft/s; 209,000,000 L/s; 55,000,000 USgal/s) approximately 6,591 cubic kilometres per annum (1,581 cu mi/a), greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined the Amazon represents 20% of the global riverine discharge to the ocean. The Amazon basin is the largest drainage basin in the world, with an area of approximately 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi). The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin. The Amazon enters Brazil with only one-fifth of the flow it finally discharges into the Atlantic Ocean, yet already has a greater flow at this point than the discharge of any other river."
